Why is HERO Capitalized?
The HERO Campaign was founded by William and Muriel Elliott after the tragic loss of their son, Navy Ensign John R. Elliott, in July 2000. Two months prior, John had graduated from the Naval Academy where he served as a Human Education Resource Officer (HERO). At graduation, John was named the outstanding HERO of his class.
If I sign up to be a Designated Driver on the HERO Campaign website, will I have to drive strangers around?
No. By signing up online, you are strictly pledging to be a designated driver for your friends and family in the future and have a plan anytime alcohol is involved.
What is a school expected to do when they become a HERO College?
The HERO Campaign College Program strives to create a cultural change on college and university campuses by promoting the use of safe and sober designated drivers. A school is asked to promote the HERO Campaign’s message through awareness and fundraising events on campus and in your school’s surrounding community. By taking a look at our example timelines (which are based on actual HERO Campaign Colleges) a school can get a better idea for what a year with the HERO Campaign can look like on their campus.
Why should College and Universities get involved?
By becoming involved in the HERO Campaign College Program, colleges and universities are showing their students that driving under the influence is preventable with the use of safe and sober designated drivers. The HERO Campaign provides a positive solution to end drinking and driving; Be a HERO. Be a Designated Driver. ®
